Frequently Asked Questions

Hetzner

How do you bill your servers?

Servers have both a monthly price cap and a price per hour. Your server's bill will never exceed its monthly price cap. If you delete your Cloud Server before the end of the billing month, you will only be billed the hourly rate. We will bill you for each cloud server until you choose to delete them. Even if you aren't actively using your server, we will bill you for it.

Do you bill servers that are off?

Yes. All servers that have finished their creation process will be billed until they are deleted, regardless of their state. This is because, internally, we allocate full resources to servers regardless of their power state. And it enables rapid startup and boot times for you, the customer.

What are the Hetzner Cloud Volumes?

It is a feature for fast, flexible, and cost-effective (SSD based) block storage which you can attach to your Hetzner Cloud Server.

How does Hetzner Online store the data in Volumes?

Every block of data is stored on three different physical servers (triple replication).

How many servers can I create?

Each customer has a default limit for the number of Cloud resources that we simultaneously provide. If you would like to increase your limit, you can send a request to our support team by opening a support ticket via Hetzner Console. Our team will quickly review your request and, if everything is in order, they will increase your limit.

Do you plan to add x feature?/Will you add more features?

We want to keep adding new features and services and are always interested in hearing from you on how we can improve our product! There are several ways you can provide us with product feedback or feature requests: Via our forum: please post your request in the Hetzner Cloud Board Via email: send us your ideas to [email protected] Unfortunately, we cannot give you a detailed roadmap of what we are working on. However, you can keep up to date by following us on our social media chann

Will you add additional locations in different geographic regions?

We have continuously expanded our cloud locations in recent years. In addition to Germany and Finland, we now also have international locations in Ashburn, Virginia; Hillsboro, Oregon (USA) and Singapore. We are constantly examining possible future locations. If you don’t want to miss the opening of a new location, subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on our social media channels.

Can I create email addresses for a subdomain?

Yes, if the subdomain is created as a separate domain in web hosting, email addresses can also be configured for it.

How much storage space do I have for emails, databases, and websites?

You can flexibly use all of the storage space in your web hosting plan for your emails, website, and databases.

What happens if I exceed my storage space?

If you exceed your storage space, you will be charged €1.09 (including 19% VAT) per GB per month. If your storage space requirements have increased significantly, you can either switch to a larger web hosting package or purchase a storage space add-on (for €1.00 per 10GB).

What is a PHP process? Why do I need PHP processes?

PHP is the programming language used by many websites (e.g., WordPress). Normally, every visitor who accesses a page requires a short-term “PHP process” to generate dynamic content. The more simultaneous visitors there are, the more PHP processes are needed. Two processes are often sufficient for small websites with little traffic, while heavily visited sites require more PHP processes.

What is the PHP memory limit?

The memory_limit in PHP determines the maximum amount of memory that a single script can use. For example, if the value is set to 192 MB, each script can use up to 192 MB of RAM during its execution. The memory limit therefore applies per process and not as a total budget for all processes. If the set limit is exceeded, PHP terminates execution and reports an error (“Allowed memory size exhausted”). This setting protects the server from excessive memory consumption.

What is Varnish and what advantages does it offer?

Varnish is a cache that can be used with CMS systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal, TYPO3). Frequently requested content is stored in the cache and can thus be delivered directly without having to query PHP or the database again. This significantly reduces the server load and results in much faster loading times. Previously, Varnish could only be activated on managed servers. Now you can use it starting with Webhosting S.

Do the web hosting packages include a domain?

No, the web hosting packages do not include a domain. This must be booked separately. Domain registration is available from Hetzner starting at /year. Without a domain, many web hosting features, such as HTTP access for publicly hosting websites, mailboxes, Varnish, and much more, cannot be used.

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a service that makes it possible to publish one or more websites on the Internet and make them accessible to all users worldwide. When internet users want to access your website, all they have to do is enter the address or domain of your website in their web browser. Are there any hidden costs for hosting?

The traffic or data traffic that is generated in total for all web hosting requests is limited with many offers from other providers and can lead to additional costs if the included amount is exceeded. With all netcup web hosting offers, all traffic is included and free of charge.

What is web hosting needed for?

Web hosting is used to store websites on servers so that they can be accessed by people anywhere in the world. Web hosting companies provide the technology and services required to make a website accessible on the internet. Web hosting customers are charged a monthly fee for this. In addition to web space, the web hosting packages also include a mail server and email storage space. In conjunction with the selected domain, you have the option of creating and using numerous email addresses. An e-m

What should I bear in mind with web hosting?

1. UptimeUptime is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a web hosting provider. Uptime is the percentage of time a server is online and available to website visitors. Most web hosting providers guarantee an uptime of at least 99%. Thanks to several network connections and particularly high-quality server hardware, we can guarantee our customers an annual average availability of 99.6%. 2. SecuritySecurity is another important aspect when choosing a web hosting provider

What types of hosting are there?

1. Shared hostingShared hosting is the most popular type of web hosting. It is the cheapest option and is perfect for small businesses and personal websites. With shared hosting, your website is hosted on the same server as other websites. This means that you share resources such as CPU and memory with other websites. 2. VPS hostingVPS hosting is a further development of shared hosting. With VPS hosting, your website is hosted on its own virtual server. This means that you have your own res

What is a VPS?

A VPS (Virtual Private Server), also known as a vServer, is a virtual machine that is hosted on a physical server and allows users to run isolated server environments with their own operating systems and applications. VPSs offer flexibility and control similar to dedicated servers, but at an affordable price. They are ideal for users who need their own server but don't want the cost and management of a physical server.

What can I do with a VPS?

With a vServer, you have the ability to run a variety of tasks, including web hosting, database management, gaming servers, development environments and more. A VPS provides a scalable and customizable platform for a variety of applications, for both Linux and Windows operating systems.

What are the advantages of a VPS?

A VPS offers numerous benefits, including flexibility, scalability, security and cost savings. You can scale your resources as needed, customize your environment and use isolated server environments for improved security. With a VPS, you can maintain control of your server environment without the cost and hassle of a dedicated server.

What is the difference between a VPS x86, VPS ARM64 and root server?

Both VPS (Virtual Private Server) and Root Servers are hosting solutions that give you access to your own virtual server. The main difference lies in the underlying architecture and the type of provisioning:VPS x86: Based on the x86 architecture with 64-bit capability. Suitable for a wide range of applications.VPS ARM: Based on the ARM architecture, also 64-bit capable. Especially efficient for specialized workloads such as IoT applications, edge computing, or resource-friendly server application

Where is the location of my VPS?

You select the server location directly on the product page before placing your order. The following locations are available:Vienna (VIE)Nuremberg (NUE)Amsterdam (AMS)Manassas/USA (MNZ) andSingapore (SIN)The respective abbreviation shows you in which data center your server is physically operated. There is also the option “No preference Europe” - you cannot specify the exact location, but your server will be set up exclusively in a European data center (e.g. Vienna, Nuremberg, or Amsterdam)

What contract terms are available for VPS Server G12?

We offer a 12-month contract term for our regular rates. Alternatively, you can choose the hourly billing model. Special rates may have different terms.

Can I expand my VPS with local block storage?

Yes, you can expand your VPS with Local Block Storage after setup. This provides you with additional storage space for your data and applications to expand your performance and storage requirements.VPS plans from Generation 10 onwards can be expanded up to a maximum of 8 TB. Generation VPS G11s plans (VPS pico G11s, VPS nano G11s) cannot be expanded with Local Block Storage. VPS Lite G12 plans can be expanded up to 4 TB.

How are the servers billed?

The servers are billed in two ways: on an hourly basisor on a 12-month basisWith the hourly rates, you pay monthly in advance and are billed on an hourly basis when you end the contract. There are no minimum contract terms or notice periods. The 12-month billing offers you long-term planning security and possible cost savings over a longer contract term.

Can I rent a Windows Server?

netcup does not offer any ready-made Windows servers. However, you have the option of installing Windows on your server yourself via the SCP. Please note that this is a 180-day test license. Beyond that, you cannot purchase Windows software licenses via netcup.
